Unfortunately I need a translator for half of this, but if you’re interested in what makes a Rubicon a Rubicon...

At least I could grasp that a 4.1 axle ratio means better off road performance than the 3.73, but a bunch of bolts that look the same?

Does anything there get rid of the  death wobble?

Au contraire, without all that infrastructure there never could be a death wobble. We are all victims of our own success.

It’s magic.

Is it only in the rubicons? I had a 91 Wrangler when I was younger and I never experienced it. My buddy had an 89 and he never experienced it either.

It’s actually something all solid front axle vehicles are susceptible to, but if you never modify your front suspension, you’re unlikely to experience it because the geometry is tuned to reduce the risk.

I  got it because an important b ushing started falling apart. Definitely eye-opening.

Makes sense. We never moded ours. Just beat them to hell off-road. One year when I got mine inspected, the shop told me my exhaust was broken in 13 different places. Fun times, fun times.

It’s more with the coil springs. The 5 link or as discribed article panhard bar or track bar as I’ve always heard it.

Once you lift you go a shit ton of geometry going on as the stock control arms are fixed, as is the stock track bar. So adding taller or stiffer springs lift the vehicle away from the axle but the control arms being the same length bring the axle closer to the center. And with a fixed track bar , as you go up the axle will shift to the drivers side because that’s where the track bar is attached.

Lifts usually greater than 3-4” will have adjustable components like trackbars and control arms. My XJ has long arm suspension where the upper trac bars are mounted to longer lowers that get mounted further back and swing in more of a radius since it’s connected to the Jeep towards the center.

I think YJs came with a tear track bar, but since it has leaf springs it really want going anywhere and one it gets lifted it’s obsolete anyway.

Hope this helps?

Worn bushings let it rear it's ugly head. Good bushings keep it in control.

4.1 vs 3.73 means it rotates and additional .37 rotations. So the spin of one tires revolution = the driveshaft spinning 4.1 times.

The lower it is the faster it will spin, the higher the number, the slower it spins.

More torque??

But also for matching larger tire sizes. A larger tire needs more Gearing as it has a longer circumference to go the same distance.

Did I say that right?

So, locking differentials and a unlocking sway bar?

Oh, and a smidgen of bigger tires?

Beefier axles too, I believe. Certainly that was true of previou s generations.

The article didn’t mention the axles. I also forgot about the front 44.

Also next yea r they’re offering full-time 4wd on the Rubicon as they already do with the Sahara, although not with the manual, nor the turbo.

That and the 4Runner one were fun reads.  Nothing I didn’t know except the anti-dive on the 5th gen 4runner is way more than my 4th gen (gx), it explains alot.  Also, I really want to try out kdss

I had a taste of it the other but I found out my rotors REALLY need to be turned.  There is nothing else causing it, but still scary under hard braking even though its relatively minor.

It was interesting to me to see where they went to extra lengths to make it better off road and where they had to compromise because of the chassis (that rear facing steeply angled shock mounting location as an example.)

Does using a panhard bar (5th link) work better on the road or off-road vs using a triangulated link setup? I s is merely to save on length of arms and space under the vehicle?

I could be wrong, and would love to be informed, but my understanding is panhard bar is better for road, but triangulated will give more flex while keeping the axle assembly more centred .

You should write an article to turn what they wrote into something legible to me re mortals.
